A slideshow of the day - scroll through to see what we got up to on the day.<br />
<br />
I must admit it was very, very hard to resit buying way too much fibre. I did succumb - 1x100g BFL hand dyed roving from Phillippa (Wheeldale Woolcrafts), plus 3x25g of delicious mustard/gold merino roving, and one of the glass Christmas tree hangers from Fiona M.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05386852386404591819noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9113187857976416972.post-53194731104313748842015-10-26T12:24:00.000+00:002015-10-26T12:24:41.817+00:00September and October passed in a blur ..............September passed in a blur of puppy / Guild duties and catching up<br />
<br />
An update on Shade will follow in another post.<br />

Which included a visit and chat with Princess Anne on day 1 <span style="font-size: x-small;">(Photo by Ronnie Galloway)</span>. Lots of chat etc with visitors/cheering competitors relatives and school children on day 2. And, though I wasn't there on day 3 (that was Guild Meeting day) some Guild members braved the rain and kept going on day 3.<br />
<br />
Other than that we've had to prepare and advertise for our Guild Gathering / Open Day in October. And I've had to sort out and complete a new challenge piece. I say new because I had another shawl started back in April but I put it away somewhere safe in June, until I could get some additional yarn blended and spun up for the other side, and guess what - yip, I couldn't find it.<br />

This is Autumn Puddle - hand dyed roving (Wheeldale Woolcrafts), spun into singles and knit up into the 'All about love' pattern<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A new addition to the household.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Shade (8 weeks old) and named after our old boy Shadow, who we lost 3 years ago.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A little sister for our boy Mac's (8 years old).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We've always had rescue dogs, but with Mac's being a bit territorial (in an non aggressive way) we hope that a non threatening pup will take him down a level or two. And, so far it looks like opting for a bitch rather than a dog might have been a great move.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So it's back to a house with two German Shepherds!</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Here it is - well so far. The timbers have been cleaned and I've stripped out the reed (and frame) and each of the four heddles. These have been set aside for cleaning - yes a general clean down as well as trying to get rid of the rust.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After cleaning down the timber I treated it all with Danish oil.</div>

Oops. A project for some night this week.</div>

Honestly I'm not looking forward to this part. Everything will need to be carefully dried off (and of course it's too big to fit in the oven - I think it will be a hair drier job), but hopefully it will be worth it at the end.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05386852386404591819noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9113187857976416972.post-20449931060606358952015-08-24T08:22:00.001+01:002015-08-24T08:22:43.115+01:00Autumn loom project<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/425/19498103674_8408c27b5e_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/425/19498103674_8408c27b5e_b.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
This autumn's big project / challenge is to start cleaning and refurbishing this floor loom.<br />
<br />
I was fortunate enough to be given the loom back in December 2013 and then be give this warping mill this spring.<br />
The loom bed is " wide and has 4 shafts, which are worked from the treadles (or will be when I get them re strung).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/459/19932748780_296557206d_b.jpg%22" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/459/19932748780_296557206d_b.jpg%22" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Firstly I'll have to untie each of the 4 heddles and carefully remove them and try to work out a non corrosive, gentle way of removing the rust from the heddle frame and each of the wire heddles.<br />
<br />
There are 76 wire heddles on each of the heddle frame (that's a grand total of 304, itsy weeny rusty wires that need to be carefully cleaned of all rust) - this will take a while to do - whatever system I find best for removing the rust.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/523/19498080424_2990dec801_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/523/19498080424_2990dec801_b.jpg" width="320" /></a> </div>
I've now pulled the loom and stand out from the garage. Hoovered off all the loose dust and debris ready for cleaning the wood with an old face cloth dampened with a lovely non-toxic and biodegradable, lovely smelling (lemon and ginger) wood cleaning fluid.<br />
<br />
With the end of the month looming (no pun intended), I have to get the Sue's PIP Testing block - round 2 - done and posted off to Jan.<br />
<br />
I've been mulling over a range of block options based on her mosaic and hope that the one that keeps pushing it's way to the fore actually works.<br />
<br />
More before the end of the week I promise.<br />

A couple of the beautiful hand dyed fabrics I brought during our Guild Exhibition back in April / May, one of our Guild members, Fiona.<br />
<br />
Fiona's been trying ice cube dyeing instead of her usual format of dyeing, and the effects are beautiful.<br />
<br />
This same member was spinning natural coloured fibre and knitting it up to make irregular hexagonal shapes which are to be blocked and sewn together to make a throw. Taking this process one step further she has made templates (eg: EPP) to make a similar throw using her new ice cube dyed fabrics. The effect is stunning. (I'll try to get a photo for you all when we have show and tell later in the year).<br />
<br />
This has had me thinking about using my own hand dyed fabrics (as well as dyeing more) in another way, so I've been looking for inspiration and fancy making one using only hand dyed fabrics. Here are some quilts that caught my eye.<br />

</div>
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/288/19499355783_5b6f705589_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/288/19499355783_5b6f705589_k.jpg" width="400" /></a>I must admit that I am a sucker for colours.<br />
It doesn't matter if it is fabric or fibre - colours grab my attention - grant some more than others but I love adventure that comes when playing with colours.<br />
<br />
The journey with either fabric or fibre can start with a dyeing play session - and I'll share more on my 'hap hazard' methods of dyeing in another post, but dyeing isn't the only adventure. <br />
<br />
We all know that in quilting every fabric adapts and for want of a better word morphs when a quilt is created. It's similar when spinning a length of hand dyed tops or roving.<br />
<br />
You get drawn by the colours in the hand dyed tops but I find that the fibre morphs when spun (and possibly blended with another fibre like silk). It changes again when the two singles are plied together, but changes yet again when taken off the bobbin and made into a skein. But the last transformation is when you use it - knit, crochet or weave.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3783/19932168738_66a5da9aaa_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3783/19932168738_66a5da9aaa_k.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3730/20112310532_01ad929c28_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="194" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3730/20112310532_01ad929c28_k.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/537/20093903506_8157270650_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/537/20093903506_8157270650_k.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3707/19932291040_1aebcc8f58_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3707/19932291040_1aebcc8f58_k.jpg" width="306" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is what I'm currently knitting up - it's actually another 'cake' of the first yarn in the photos above.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3777/20094380206_5f7cf43a1f_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3777/20094380206_5f7cf43a1f_k.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/270/20112618202_475981f461_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/270/20112618202_475981f461_k.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And I'm hoping that I can get to grips with this wonderful acquisition that's been sitting in the garage awaiting some TLC </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/425/19498103674_9592f3ccaa_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/425/19498103674_9592f3ccaa_k.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/459/19932748780_5c507b6b43_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/459/19932748780_5c507b6b43_k.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
and when I get the loom sorted, sorting out the warp should be easier with this warping mill</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/523/19498080424_335e55f2e3_k.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/523/19498080424_335e55f2e3_k.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
This is a project for the autumn and I promise to share my journey, warts and all, from the cleaning, re stringing and other TLC on the loom, winding the warp and hopefully warping up the loom. Then it's playtime - weaving with these delicious hand spun yarns.<br />
<br />
Until next time, take care<br />
Ethne<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">These are two inspiration mosaic's that I've made up for my PIP Testing partners </span></div>
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7684/18091294825_ba8a7516ca_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7684/18091294825_ba8a7516ca_z.jpg" width="640" /></a><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">in the </span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/groups/2761813@N25/" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">PIP Testing Improv </a><a href="https://www.flickr.com/groups/2761813@N25/" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Round Robin quilt bee</a><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">. </span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">'m currently waiting the arrival of block 1 or starter block from Susan.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">A little background - Lynz (<a href="http://www.domesticlightandmagic.blogspot.co.uk/">Domestic Light and Magic blog</a>) a couple of months ago posted about testing Flickr and seeing if we could 'get it to work like it used to'. Flickr lost a lot of it's community feel when it changed the format and though it's improved some of it's connectivity there is still a way to go to get back the easy to see access of old. Alls well and good looking at the new photos posted on the opening page but trying to get easily into discussions and see what's new - well it's still a little convoluted - easy enough on a PC or laptop even a tablet but trying to try other devices like a Kindle Fire or phone .......</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">and, I readily agreed to partake in the group, in the hopes of getting the quilting mojo kick started and trying to overcome my issues with Flickr. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I normally now access the internet via the PC at work or my Kindle HD Fire at home - I rarely get the laptop out unless doing something more involved or specific. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">So the issues I've had - Kindle wise - logging into Flickr is OK - scrolling to the Group OK (though sometimes it won't open), when I can get in I can see the photos OK but often can't see the comments linked to a photo and though I can see there are new discussion comments, sometimes that won't open up either - which means either the laptop or a wait until I'm at the PC. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The Process: Round 1 - we each make a starter block which is passed onto another group member. Each block has a 2 month window (which also includes a mailing period for members - as we located all around the world)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This is my completed the starter block and it's been posted it off to Jan</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3684/18642884963_42f0124511_z.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/4/3684/18642884963_42f0124511_z.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Another thing I'm considering is a re jig of my blog - having been away for a while a facelift might be in order too - I've been looking for inspiration all over the web - problem number 1 - colour background or white (which seems to what's the norm at the moment), so please bear with me whilst I try out the changes.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />It's not that I haven't been creating in one way or another - but I haven't taken photos and got organised enough to share with you all.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />
One thing that has taken up both time and energy has been my final year as President of the Spinners, Weavers and Dyers Guild. I'm now into the final stretch of 3 years and we now have the big Triennial Exhibition completed.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />Here are some photographs or our Guild section of the Exhibition (unfortunately I didn't get any photos of the naturals room as my camera battery died - you'd think that having been there almost every day I'd have got photos over the course of the exhibition, but no I left it to the last day - typical)</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I'm still spinning fibre and was lucky enough to be gifted a loom (in need of TLC) some time back. I hope to get this loom cleaned and refurbished towards the autumn so that I can weave with some of my handspun fibres.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I've also just purchased 2kg of Egyptian cotton fabric for dyeing. Yes the quilting mojo is blossoming ;-) and t</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">hough I've got existing quilting projects to finish off I've joined in Lyndsey's PIPtesting Group on Flickr, which should be an interesting and relaxed Improv Round Robin Bee. So bear with me there will be quilting project projects to blog about (and I've taken the precaution of buying a new camera battery charger, so hopefully there will be lots of photos).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Thank you for your patience whilst I wasn't blogging but hopefully things will pick up soon.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The other Guild / Groups are - the Embroiders Guild and Solway Quilters. Unfortunately being President of the SWD Guild has meant that I've temporarily set aside my membership of Solway Quilters to devote attention to the SWD's, but hopefully that will change come 2016.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The exhibition is a display of textiles, of various disciplines and shown over two buildings on the premises. There are also raffles for each of the Guilds / Groups available to all who visit the exhibition. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">One project I'm currently working on is a baby quilt using hand dyed fabrics. A series of 4 1/2" squares with improve triangles across two corners, which are randomly placed to create wonky squares.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Here's the progress so far and I'm hoping to get it finished to display, tease folk at our corner at the Dumfries Agricultural show at Park Farm in August.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The is however another project I need to get finished for August too ..... a 21st birthday quilt for a lovely lassie. More on that soon, (I hope).</span><br />

So that has meant that crafting playtime has taken a bit of a back seat.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I do try to lift something small most evenings - currently I'm trying to knit two bias scarfs </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This one is with some merino / silk yarn I spun 2 years ago and I'm knitting it from the centre out and adding beads to the ends - a lovely fine yarn, knit on 6mm needles</span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5520/14434121244_7360a7b767.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5520/14434121244_7360a7b767.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
</div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Whereas this one is knit using some yarn scraps using linen stitch - these scraps have been through various trial projects and who's to say they will even last out this one, time will tell.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">At our last Guild meeting I picked up 3x100g of BFL hand dyed tops and within 2 days had these two hanks of singles yarn spun - the third is well underway ...... a nice break from that fine spinning I seem to now do without thinking. I'm intending using these singles for weaving. Will I do some scarfs / shawls or maybe make some wide strips and make them into a blanket - time and mojo will tell.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">We get the chance to surf around the world via the internet, viewing and admiring Bloggers Quilts of every style and size you can imagine. So, without further ado, welcome all in blog land visiting my scribbles about patchwork, quilts, quilting, dyeing, spinning and general craftyness.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I missed out posting a quilt in the Autumn Festival last year - well basically because I didn't have one finished - home improvements and general life got in the road of quilting and crafting, but this year there is one finish already ......</span><br />

<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Another thing you'll notice if you look closely at the photos is that this quilt was made using a Quilt as You Go panel technique - making it easier to quilt on a domestic sewing machine - but that's not to say you can't make one using one large panel of background fabric, because you could.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yMOZdIUhSQg/U3R4mh1GW4I/AAAAAAAACHg/r3pO1oT0e9Y/s1600/close+up+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yMOZdIUhSQg/U3R4mh1GW4I/AAAAAAAACHg/r3pO1oT0e9Y/s1600/close+up+2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">The b</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">eauty about this quilt is that no matter how hard you try to create an identical copy it will always be different, and you don't have to stick with the feather shape you can do a leaf, a heart, a flower,an animal - well basically anything that takes your fancy.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3g-6__z39Mg/U3R4pbJQuPI/AAAAAAAACHw/a5HF9SUbI8k/s1600/close+up+3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3g-6__z39Mg/U3R4pbJQuPI/AAAAAAAACHw/a5HF9SUbI8k/s1600/close+up+3.JPG" style="cursor: move;" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">With me when quilting, or crafting in general I love to 'play'. I like to push the boundaries of my comfort zone and try new things. More and more I love take the concept or idea of a quilt and try to create it. Yes, sometimes it works and sometimes I have to adapt and rethink what I'm doing, or wanting to achieve, but more often than not the journey is fun and well worth it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">As a result from the 'journey' in making this quilt I've pulled out some batik charms and sewn them together for another reverse applique project - it's a smaller quilt but a larger design which is a bit more intricate which hopefully I'll have ready for the Autumn Bloggers Quilt Festival if I can get some of my other quilts finished (these include finishing an old UFO for a 21st birthday present in August).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Towards the end of last year <a href="http://lilysquilts.blogspot.co.uk/">Lynne</a> put a 'call' out to anyone interested in making something with some mini charm squares and I ended up being one of those who commented who was selected to create a pattern for the Spring Fat Quarterly issue, which is out today.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">So here is Feather Falls Quilt:-</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lFqrEuX_MxA/U1-LBzhWajI/AAAAAAAACF4/jhQL6xuICNg/s1600/finished+quilt.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lFqrEuX_MxA/U1-LBzhWajI/AAAAAAAACF4/jhQL6xuICNg/s1600/finished+quilt.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">I want to thank all at Fat Quarterly, (especially <a href="http://lilysquilts.blogspot.co.uk/">Lynne</a>), for trusting me to create something, as well as delivering the pattern, photos etc on time to the incredible Tacha, who pulled my scribbles and photos together to create an understandable article for this quarters issue of the </span><a href="http://www.fatquarterly.com/" style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Fat Quarterly e-magazine</a><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">After mulling over various design ideas for the mini charm packs, I did the usual and jumped in with both feet flying and created a double bed quilt (approximately 70x70").</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This ended up being a lovely fun and relatively quick project, (probably as I kept the FMQ into simple wandering lines).</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6PmkTJynH-8/U1-MTWVsp7I/AAAAAAAACGE/n1tR6rpXjSA/s1600/large+feather.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6PmkTJynH-8/U1-MTWVsp7I/AAAAAAAACGE/n1tR6rpXjSA/s1600/large+feather.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9VgyKySpEK0/U1-MhbuYLKI/AAAAAAAACGM/uFgtVUzsR7s/s1600/close+up+1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9VgyKySpEK0/U1-MhbuYLKI/AAAAAAAACGM/uFgtVUzsR7s/s1600/close+up+1.JPG" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I created it using reverse applique and QSYG panels, which also helped limit the usual FMQ problems of quilt bulk through a small 'harp' space on the sewing machine. Something I will be doing again.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I hope you like it ...</span><br />
<br />

<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Crib Quilt - March 2015 (want to have at the Guild to spur on others to make things), so working towards May 2014 </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Soft sculpture spider - March 2015</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Lichen scarf/shawl - hand spun fibre, felted panels - March 2015</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Teal / batik quilt (because the back panels are hand dyed fabric) - March 2015</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Raffle scarfs / shawls - something for the teens - March 2015</span></li>
</ul>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Here's a little insight into my warped way of planning:-</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Crib Quilt -</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Two cotton pillow cases - tea dye these a nice soft tone - secondary fabric another hand dyed fabric or use hand dyed fabric scraps?</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Design - something along the improv format with a fleece backing - time to visit <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/flamingstitches/improv-quilts/">my improv Pinterest board</a></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">These designs jumped out at me</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://carolyntabbott.smugmug.com/Art/Fiber-Art/Architectural-Reflections/i-qqsKWDf/0/L/Architectural-Reflections-Iw-L.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://carolyntabbott.smugmug.com/Art/Fiber-Art/Architectural-Reflections/i-qqsKWDf/0/L/Architectural-Reflections-Iw-L.jpg" height="320" width="213" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><a href="http://carolyntabbott.smugmug.com/Art/Fiber-Art/Architectural-Reflections/27819317_9fkM9q#!i=2346110051&k=qqsKWDf">Architectural Reflections I by Carolyn T Abbott</a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7196/6840110008_876a0c7249_b.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7196/6840110008_876a0c7249_b.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><a href="http://r0ssie.blogspot.co.uk/2012/03/kelp-quilt.html">rOssie's Kelp Quilt</a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://kathleenprobst.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/ewpt_cache/540x600_95_2_c_aba7c483d236ac30a9cd145a9e8a40a1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://kathleenprobst.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/ewpt_cache/540x600_95_2_c_aba7c483d236ac30a9cd145a9e8a40a1.jpg" height="320" width="288" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://kathleenprobst.com/?page_id=2669#mg"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Leaves - Kathleen Probst</span></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Now my dilemma is my current stash of hand dyed fabrics - as you may remember I'm using them on the back of the Batik / Teal curve quilt</span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/10940801904" title="Teal / batik QAYG by Flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="Teal / batik QAYG" height="266" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2848/10940801904_b93be3f6f0.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/10186940083" title="Teal / batik curves quilt by Flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="Teal / batik curves quilt" height="266" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2862/10186940083_81cc7dd2d2.jpg" width="400" /></a><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">So it looks like I'd best stick with fabric scraps if wanting to use fabric from my stash. Of course I could dye more fabric but for that I'd best</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> consider a colour palette. Something non gender specific to go with a pale beige or do I play safe and stick with white?</span></div>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/6174542297/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" title="signature panel by flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="signature panel" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6175/6174542297_3f03c07d1f_m.jpg" height="132" width="200" /></a>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05386852386404591819noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9113187857976416972.post-25338548783041469792014-04-13T15:56:00.000+01:002014-04-13T15:56:40.880+01:00How come .....How come, she we are busy and have a pile of UFO' s waiting to be worked on,or better still completed, we end up considering something new that needs to be given priority ....<br />
<br />
I must learn to think before I speak poor before I suggest something ... you see, in being the current president of the Dumfries SWD Guild I've been thinking about the various challenges and exhibitions that we will be having over the next year to 18 months. <br />
<br />
It's also had me thinking about stretching ourselves a little, in trying new things and thinking'outside the box'. In mentioning it at our last meeting I suggested that we group items together for the raffle prizes, and making them more enticing and specific for folk to be able to select which prize they'd love to win - eg: adult female, adult male, baby layette items, crafters supplies etc.<br />
<br />
So now I'm thinking what can I shop to help inspire other members into making? A scarf, a shawl, a crib quilt or a patchwork bib ..... And, this is in addition to trying to create a fabric sculpture (or two).<br />
<br />
The simple fact is I must be nuts, but in all honesty I'm loving the challenge. So who knows which item will be completed first, but I promise to share the journey with you - see you all soon.<br />
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/13715164733" title="Shawl by Flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="Shawl" height="400" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5544/13715164733_af1e351bed.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">The closer to completion, the more I became unsure of the shape and how it would sit. So I'm off to see what 'pattern' I'd like to try.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">As I mentioned yesterday, it's that time of year again - for the SWD <a href="http://www.wsd.org.uk/ex.htm">National Exhibition</a>. This year the exhibition will be at <span style="background-color: white; text-align: -webkit-center;">Hostry at </span><a href="http://www.cathedral.org.uk/historyheritage/new-work-of-art---architecture-hostry-and-refectory--links-original--dr-jeremy-taylor-.aspx" style="background-color: white; text-align: -webkit-center;" target="_blank">Norwich Cathedral</a><span style="background-color: white; text-align: -webkit-center;"> and the crypt of </span><a href="http://www.norwich-school.org.uk/" style="background-color: white; text-align: -webkit-center;" target="_blank">Norwich School</a><span style="background-color: white; text-align: -webkit-center;"> </span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; text-align: -webkit-center;">(which is in the grounds of the Cathedral)</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> from 15th May until 1st June 2014.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Last year I was amazed when my Jacaranda Dreams quilt was selected for the exhibition and this year another quilted project - a work bag - has been selected. </span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/13716636863" title="Work Bag by Flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="Work Bag" height="400" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7128/13716636863_f09f4d38bb.jpg" width="400" /></a><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/13716627865" title="Work Bag by Flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="Work Bag" height="400" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3797/13716627865_678cc9335b.jpg" width="400" /></a><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/13716658513" title="Work Bag by Flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="Work Bag" height="400" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2827/13716658513_2a3c42d26c.jpg" width="400" /></a><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I think next year I'll maybe submit the cushion I did for Fat Quarterly Aurifil tester, </span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/6599465895" title="finished cushion by Flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="finished cushion" height="375" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7026/6599465895_3e943aa2eb.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">hopefully along with another hand dyed quilt project, (which has yet to be conceived and fabricated).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/6174542297/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" title="signature panel by flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="signature panel" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6175/6174542297_3f03c07d1f_m.jpg" height="132" width="200" /></a>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05386852386404591819noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9113187857976416972.post-55222780260098715102014-04-08T13:37:00.003+01:002014-04-08T16:04:36.247+01:00A little play time .....<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Last week I decided to make a little 8" bag for the open selection at the Spinners, Weavers and Dyers Guild National Exhibition. I wanted something quick and easy to do that I could take to our Guild on the 12th April.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Inspired by <a href="http://kathleenprobst.com/?page_id=2735">Wings</a> quilts by Kathleen Probst<span style="color: black;"> </span></span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> - I came up with this sketch design</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/13715132315" title="8" bag for SWD National Exhibition by Flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="8" bag for SWD National Exhibition" height="400" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5339/13715132315_a6485ac5bb.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">and in a few hours had made this ......</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/13715125195" title="8" bag for SWD National Exhibition by Flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="8" bag for SWD National Exhibition" height="400" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3780/13715125195_d4a91188a3.jpg" width="400" /></a>
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/13715114965" title="8" bag for SWD National Exhibition by Flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="8" bag for SWD National Exhibition" height="400" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7102/13715114965_c89e4c79c5.jpg" width="400" /></a>
</div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Another last minute 'make' last week was to start a hand knit shawl. I'd doodled a shawl shape towards the end of last year on some scrap paper at work and have periodically mulling over the how to's etc on how it could be made. But last Thursday night I just hunted out the beautiful merino/silk yarn I'd spun up from Limegreenjelly. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/13715164733" title="Shawl by Flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="Shawl" height="400" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5544/13715164733_af1e351bed.jpg" width="400" /></a>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Great progress so far. </span><span style="text-align: center;">I just hope it looks good - shape wise - when it's pressed .....</span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">An, I've been doing a few sketches</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Sorry, but there cannot be a big reveal until the magazine goes live, but here are a few sneak, peak photos.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I'm really happy with this quilt and love how it was quickly turned around. The only negative point it the quilt label - it printed of great, it was made up just as I'd hoped, but I needed to do something extra to ensure the printing didn't disappear when washed. So back to the development department for a lasting quilt label. I will replace this one once I've cracked the issue with disappearing ink ;o)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Now that one challenge has finished I'm working on the SWD Guild challenge for this year - fungi, ferns, lichens, insects, creatures and critters. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I have found inspiration around the internet and with our big Tri Annual Exhibition looming next year at the local Arts Centre, I'm going to work on a few projects. One is well underway </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">and another is slowly getting a stash of 'elements'</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Things have been a little involved here over the last month or two.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Last month was the Spinners, Weavers and Dyers Guild (SWD) AGM (I'm in my second year of three, as President), so there was a bit of planning and sorting out to be done for that. That meeting was quickly followed by some self imposed organizing in preparing a range of class / workshop / guest talk posters and ideas to pass on to subsequent committees - I'm still working my way through this) - you see I had this idea that rather than a list that some simple, fun and informative posters would possibly work better in sparking interest and support.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Here are a couple of them .......</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qrWzWGz7h5w/Ux7F4DVmVRI/AAAAAAAAB_k/GTiJyNp0T8U/s1600/Fleece+Prep.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qrWzWGz7h5w/Ux7F4DVmVRI/AAAAAAAAB_k/GTiJyNp0T8U/s1600/Fleece+Prep.jpg" height="320" width="226" /></a></div>
<br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">It wasn't long after the AGM that emails started to flow in connection with next years Tri Guild / Tri Annual Exhibition. This is a BIG exhibition at our local Arts Centre (<a href="http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=2437&p=0">Gracefield</a>) that takes place </span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">every</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> third year with the SWD's, the Embroidery Guild and the local Quilters Guild. So I see meeting in connection with this starting in the near future.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">In the background I've been quietly crafting away and promise to share some photos in future posts:-</span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Mini Charm Challenge Quilt - I'm currently binding this up hoping to get some decent finished shots for the e-magazine article. I'm tweaking the 'how to make' pattern description</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">, along with the 'how to' photos and am drawing up some pattern format guides. I hope all is OK for Lynne and Co, for inclusion in the appropriate Fat Quarterly issue. I've even found a quilt label format that I like - it's different from the usual but give me scope for adaption to suit each project, including knitting, crochet and weaving (when I get that sorted). Now the label I can share with you and not give away too many secrets - see below.</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">SWD 2014 challenge piece - for once I've found some inspiration that has me starting work on the challenge piece well before the summer months - our themes this year are:-</span></li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iDLtF1uVPFo/Ux7I4jrKh4I/AAAAAAAACAI/49Hj1qMG-oI/s1600/2014+Challenge.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="display: inline !important; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iDLtF1uVPFo/Ux7I4jrKh4I/AAAAAAAACAI/49Hj1qMG-oI/s1600/2014+Challenge.jpg" height="226" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"></span><br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">Spinning - I'm working away on 300g of BFL hand dyed roving. I'm blending it with some silk and trying to create an ombre yarn and of course I don't make things easy for myself - no I want to keep the rovings colour format so I'm Navajo plying it so have to spin it up quite fine to maximize</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> the amount of yarn created.</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">So my quilt label ....... I can't remember where the idea came from, whether it was in a dream or something I picked up whilst internet surfing but rather than a flat label which is stitched down onto the quilt back it's more of a tag label. Something that I can sew into the binding seam that's double sided - a logo and quilt name on the uppermost side with quilt info on the back side.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--Hk3N11rh_Q/Ux7k1zQZFFI/AAAAAAAACAY/6Ibg8aAeev8/s1600/Quilt+Label.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--Hk3N11rh_Q/Ux7k1zQZFFI/AAAAAAAACAY/6Ibg8aAeev8/s1600/Quilt+Label.jpg" height="239" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I've put together another post with a description and photo's of how I made and sewed in the label, so watch out for it here soon.</span><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/6174542297/" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" title="signature panel by flamingstitches, on Flickr"><img alt="signature panel" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6175/6174542297_3f03c07d1f_m.jpg" height="132" width="200" /></a>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05386852386404591819noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9113187857976416972.post-22252067411872870372014-01-24T08:24:00.001+00:002014-01-24T08:24:18.738+00:00Charm Packs - One of this years UFO's<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">A quick and easy way to buy fabric and introduce yourself to patchwork are pre-cut fabric packs.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">There are of course now a huge range of pre-cuts and of course the Moda Bake Shop is a great place to find lots of ideas for projects that you can use these pre-cut fabric packs to create something beautiful to share and use.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Of course I don't want to stick with any of the fantastic range of traditional pieced projects that are available - I just want to play and do something with an improv twist.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Take the Kona solids quilt - 1 pack of 5 inch charms, where I grouped them into complimenting colours and just cut them into strips of varying widths and angles then hand sewed them when on holiday with a background fabric.</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">When I came back from holiday there were 27 pieced fabric strips that had to be 'grouped' together in some way to create a block.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="333" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/8019282170/player/8dba095083" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">After a few of the doodles a quilt block design developed.</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="333" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/8089484824/player/7d569236e9" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Once the three coloured strips were joined together I added another section to the block. A series of Pepper and Glacier fabric strips of varying widths, all sewn with a slightly curved seam, with the Glacier fabric strips all being quite narrow to reflect the narrow strip joining the coloured sections of the blocks. I again varied how these 'end fillers' were made up from block to block - some would have 3 Glacier strips and others only 2.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="333" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/8089481597/player/e3947e8576" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I also made the decision at this point to make do QAYG panels. Therefore it became 3 long horizontal strips, each made up with of these blocks, which would be made into a strip by sewing in a Pepper fabric panel, again using a curved seam to suit the shape when the edge of each block was trimmed down, (I wanted to minimize he amount of fabric cut away, which would have been a lot if I'd decided to go with straight seams). </span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="333" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/8089479785/player/fdb3fb1df0" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Then came the process of deciding on the possible FMQ patterns to enhance the quilt.</span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">After considering and ditching various designs I decided to quilt only the Pepper fabric and stitch in he ditch around the edge of all of the coloured fabrics. I also continued the thin strips joining the charm strips by leaving a thin un-quilted section along the edge of each of the blocks. So far on the one horizontal panel that I've quilted I've kept the quilting confined to the three blocks and the fabric panels joining each block. There is, I suppose you'd call them sashing fabrics to the outside edges of the 3 blocks and I'm considering a different quilting pattern there. You see I'm wanting to limit the quilting in this area as it will also include the area were the QAYG panels will be joined together.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="500" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/8493097936/player/5e89d48141" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="333"></iframe><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="333" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/8493100190/player/e44d700c8b" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="500"></iframe><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="500" mozallowfullscreen="" msallowfullscreen="" oallowfullscreen="" src="https://www.flickr.com/photos/flamingstitches/8493095856/player/be84a6d406" webkitallowfullscreen="" width="333"></iframe><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I promise to keep you up to date with this quilt when it gets pulled out of the UFO pile later this year.</span></div>

As time has gone on I've constantly added images/links to this board. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">In considering ideas for a mini charm pack challenge one thing I've been looking at was feathers, but have you noticed the, almost, daily increase of feathers in quilting projects since the turn of the year?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">We of course have many considering FMQ feathers - a technique that just 'has' to be mastered ............</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">For example my blogging friends Joan and Marjorie have working hard on improving and getting to grips with feathers on their domestic sewing machine</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">In my constant exploration of the internet over the last few years there are certainly some quilts out there that instantly reconcilable as 'belonging' in each of these categories.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Now I'm likely to differ from some of you might ID a quilt but here are some that I've found and love and how I'd categorize them</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;">:-</span><span style="font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;"> </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I would say that I'm tending to work in a more 'improv' format in recent years, as I seem to 'invent, compose and create with little or no preparation'. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">There has been a tendency to work towards minimizing the fabric wastage in what I've been making. So more often curved seams are used in lieu of squaring blocks off, and lots of scraps have been kept and used for making up strips / blocks as well as maximizing the use of stash fabrics (where possible).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Sometimes I'll sketch out a possible quilt idea / layout, and I do mean 'sketch', a really loose doodle on some scrap paper. No graph paper, no careful thinking of fabric quantities etc. It's really just a 'flying by the seat of your pant's' process when it comes to creating the quilt. In a later post I'll go through my hap hazard process for one of my 2014 UFO projects - the Kona Solid Quilt.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br />
Two packs of mini charms of Malka Dubrawsky's new fabric range 'From Outside In'</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.pinkchalkfabrics.com/images/medium/cloth/4CP-MODA-FromOutsideIn_MED.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.pinkchalkfabrics.com/images/medium/cloth/4CP-MODA-FromOutsideIn_MED.jpg" width="200" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">image from <a href="http://www.pinkchalkfabrics.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=37_296_297&products_id=15799">Pink Chalk Fabrics</a></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I've never worked with a mini charm pack before, and to be honest it's been a while since I've worked with any patterned fabric (other than batiks). So it's a bit of a double challenge, and knowing me I'll no take the simple route, I'm more likely to make things more difficult for myself.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">In the meantime I've got to pick a fabric for the background to whatever I create. Now with such a range of bold colours and, with the varying background colours to so many of the fabrics what do I go with?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">White or snow might be OK, but would it give the fabrics some 'punch'</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">A mid tone - grey, green or blue - I don't think there would be enough contrast.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">A dark tone - personally I think this would be best. I want to avoid black or grey, so that leaves me with blue, green or red.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">After some playing around I've decided to go with Kona Indigo - a lovely rich dark blue. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I've been toying with the idea for some time about having a Kona Solids colour card. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Imagine 271 sunning fabrics and something that's quick and handy for finding matching or contrasting fabrics. Though the internet is great unfortunately the colour reproduction can be very very dodgy. You only have to check out the same colour in two or three online fabric shops to see what I mean. Here's an example:-</span><br />
